Introduction to the interactive games

The interactive games follow three life stories centered around the choices facing the Danish immigrants. The students becomes co-creators of the narrative and can impact the story through their decisions. Every choice has consequences…

Game 1: Nils and Johanne

Nils Nielsen (23) is the son of peasant farmer Gregers Nielsen. He lives in the village of Helberskov, south of Randers. He has fallen in love with Johanne (21), a farmer's daughter, but her parents will not allow her to marry Nils. This is why he is trying to buy his own land. He works for a nobleman who owns much of the land, and who treats him harshly. Nils lives in a small room in the stable, where in winter it is cold and there is frost on the walls. He is the middle son of a family with eleven children. His mother and father work hard just to survive. The year is 1868.

Game 2: Jørgen Strange 14

When he was a ten-year old, Jørgen was sent out to work on a farm five miles from his home on the island of Lolland. Every day he walked the long distance to work, leaving home early and returning late. After each summer’s work of tending geese, he is paid in wool for a pair of socks and cloth for a pair of pants.

Jørgen is the youngest son in a family of nine. His father is a day labourer for a farmer, and his mother does housework and spins yarn for the farmer’s wife. The family rents a two-room cottage from the farmer. The floor is of clay, and there is only a small north-facing window. In addition to their daily work for the farmer and his wife, they cultivate their own vegetable garden and sell some of the produce at a local market in the evenings. There is, however, never enough food for everyone, so Jørgen, like his brothers and sisters, has to work.

Jørgen is now fourteen. He has been confirmed in the parish church, and it is time for him to leave home.

Game 3: Elisabeth Bondesen

In 1888, Elisabeth lives in the town of Jægerspris, north of Roskilde on the island of Zealand. She is the daughter of a ship’s captain, and her mother works as a maid in the city. Elisabeth has a brother who immigrated to America and lives in Idaho.

Elisabeth's family is doing well, but Elisabeth longs to travel and explore on her own. This is unusual since like other young women, she is expected to marry, take care of her husband, have a family, manage the home, and raise the children.

Elisabeth’s father believes that Hans Toft, the eldest son of the local baker, would, be a good husband for his daughter. Both her parents feel Elisabeth is a little too independent and sassy. She, however, has become interested in photography and wants to be a photographer.
